 Territory dodged a bullet: Stanhope

Territory dodged a bullet: Stanhope

08 Sep, 2010 09:13 AM
Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says the ACT ''dodged a bullet'' yesterday with Julia Gillard, instead of Tony Abbott, securing minority government.

But Canberra Liberals leader Zed Seselja believes that new ''rainbow coalition'' formed by Ms Gillard will be Australia's least legitimate administration in generations.

The Chief Minister said Mr Abbott's pledges to slash Commonwealth public service jobs would have been disastrous for the territory's economy and Australia had nothing to fear from minority government. Mr Stanhope said his Government's parliamentary agreement with the ACT Greens had delivered stable government to the territory and that he was confident Ms Gillard would be able to govern confidently with the support of two country Independents and one Green.

''It's fantastic result for Australia and for Canberra and we haven't forgotten and we shouldn't forget the promises that Tony Abbott made during the election campaign that would have hade a massive impact on Canberra, that would have sent us into recession,'' he said.

''There's no doubt that we've dodged a great big bullet that was heading fair and square for our forehead.''

Mr Stanhope predicted success for Ms Gillard as a prime minister elected in her own right.

The Rainbow Coalition follows the shower of minority power. I am informed that Mr Stanhope is a member of the ALP, so it comes as no surprise that he supports PM elect Gillard. His claim that this is a good thing for the country still faces a very big test. Senator Bobby Brown is walking proudly around our town.

Yes, Canberra dodged the sheriff's silver bullets, but the danger isn't over. The neocons will try and destabilise the government. All their talk of illegitimacy sounds like very sour grapes.

I think it is time the Government put out the message that it is somehow "illegitimate" because it is a minority government. This is obviously going to be the opposition meme and that of the Murdoch press in particular. It needs to be nipped in the bud as soon as possible. There are many countries around the world, and indeed some governments in Australia in the minority - this does not make them illegitimate. The Labor and LNP paties had equal numbers elected. The PM negotiated with the Green MP and the Independents and was able to form a legitimate government with the support of the majority of those. End of story.

Why does Mister Stanhope sound like a typical one-eyed politician!?? Cos he is one! Doomsayer, anti-Coalition, left-wing ranter! Gotta love the tie though! ;-)

Canberra has NOT "dodged a bullet". WE HAVE BEEN SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS OF A GREENIE-LABOR COALITION. Luckily, the non-parole period is a lot shorter. An election could be called at any time. We still have a chance to throw these jokers out. Gillard does NOT deserve this victory. Fact is, the Liberals got more votes than these idiots, only the idiots cheated by getting other idiots to support them. Tony Abbott is the only one with the legitimacy, therefore he's the one that deserves power. Not "MS" (Miss) Gillard.

Of course, Stanhope, has conveniently glossed over what years of mismanagement by Labor Govts at all levels have done to this Country. The mantra of 'spend, spend, spend' is creating a deficit that may never ever be erased, especially with a Green/Labor alliance just scraping into power.

After all this time he still hasn't fixed his teeth, its not politacally and publicly acceptable. It portrays the wrong image. WE may have dodged the bullet but Jon is holding the Bazooka.
