Three hurt in Mitchell explosion

15 Dec, 2009 02:19 PM
Three people have been taken to hospital following an explosion and fire in Mitchell.

Intensive care paramedics transported the injured to hospital suffering burns.

The explosion is believed to have occurred in a compactor unit at the SteriHealth building on Sandford Street just before 1pm.

About 100 people were evacuated from two buildings at the site.

District Officer Martin Lloyd from the ACT Fire Brigade said the explosion is believed to have occurred after a box of aerosol cans was placed into a compactor.

Firefighters extinguished a small blaze and were testing air quality before allowing workers back into the building.

Workcover is investigating.
