Two men kidnapped and terrorised three people during a rampage this week and tried to extort money and property from their victims, a court has heard.
The ACT Magistrates Court heard yesterday that one of the accused, Mathew James Massey, had a lengthy history of violence and used his reputation to intimidate the victims.
Both Massey and his co-accused Fakatuomaulupe Ngata, who are alleged to have been high on a cocktail of illegal drugs when they abducted their alleged victims, are also suspected of committing several assaults and a home invasion.
They are both charged with kidnapping and unlawful confinement and were refused bail yesterday after Magistrate John Burns heard a police account of the alleged offences.
Constable Ben Case told the court that Massey, who had been out of jail for less than a month, was arrested early on Tuesday over an alleged home invasion at Bentley Suites in Forrest. But the 33-year-old Ngunnawal man was released because of a lack of evidence.
Police allege that he and Ngata arrived at a Fyshwick garage at 5.30pm that day and abducted mechanic Douglas Fry.
