Traffic and parking study approves plans for newmosque inGungahlin

18 Nov, 2009 11:01 AM
An independent traffic report says 250 people will use a new mosque planned for Nicholls during peak times and the proposal to provide just 71 parking spaces on the site will met the Territory Plan's needs.

The report says there will be enough spaces in a nearby car park south of the Gold Creek Primary School to take any overflow during the peak prayer time of 12.30-1.30pm on Fridays, when the 250-person mosque is expected to be full.

The study suggests some people will walk or cycle to worship, some will travel by bus and at least half will share a ride to the mosque.

The report also suggested the road on which the mosque is proposed, Kelleway Avenue, carried about 290 vehicles an hour in each direction, ''well within its capacity of about 600 vehicles per hour in each direction''.

It is expected that four people at most will otherwise use the site.

The study suggests that a section of the avenue where schoolchildren cross near bus stops be rezoned from 60km/h to 50km/h.

The ACT Government has agreed in principle to sell the land directly to Canberra Muslim Community Incorporated for a new community centre and mosque. The Land Development Agency commissioned the traffic and parking study in response to community concerns. The findings will be discussed at a public information session at 6.30pm today at the Gold Creek Senior School.

Canberra's Muslim community says it needs the mosque as it has outgrown the ACT's sole mosque in Yarralumla.

The study says 71 car spaces at the Nicholls mosque ''will comply with ACT requirements''.
