Tuggeranong forum boycott

16 Aug, 2010 09:36 AM
Staff from the ACT Planning and Land Authority would no longer be sent to meetings of the Tuggeranong Community Council because of aggression at a meeting last Thursday, an authority spokesman said.

The meeting, at the Southern Cross Club in Tuggeranong, was for a briefing by the Land and Planning Agency and the authority on land releases in Tuggeranong and the Eastern Broadacre Study.

The council is concerned about planned developments including gas turbines for a data centre and the expansion of Hume.

The authority's spokesman said staff would not go to future council meetings because of aggression. ''From the feedback we got, it was not very pleasant for our staff,'' he said.

Council president Darryl Johnston said yesterday he was surprised by the allegation. He had not been at the meeting but had spoken to its chair and to other members. He had been told questioning had been firm but not rude, intimidating or bullying.

Hi, I was present at this forum for the whole evening and observed no "unpleasant" behaviour.

I too was there and am stunned by the negative comment. There was NOTHING untoward. ALSO the entire proceedings was videotaped and will be on the TCC website www.tuggcc.com from this evening. See for yourself!

I was at this meeting and thought everyone's behaviour was acceptable. The questions asked by the audience showed that people are extremely concerned about further industrial development around Hume and fear their concerns will not be seriously considered by ACTPLA.

This meeting was supposed to be about the governments plans to industrialise all of the broadacre closest to existing residential land in Tuggeranong yet the government representatives spent an hour and half telling us how Canberra is being sustained by construction and building companies and how great it is to have affordable housing. The representative speaking about the EBS tried to infer that because there was land in the North preserved by Defence it was ok to industrialise the south - areotropolis and frieght hub were not mentioned! No one was rude although really there was good reason to be. There were 4 govt reps and many upstanding members of the community stayed to the very end and beyond - if anyone was threatened or uncomfortable couldn't they have indicated this to their colleagues or members of the TCC still present or members of the community who would have come to help? No one saw, heard anything threatening during or after the meeting. Could this be just an excuse for the government reps not wanting to face the community and tell them, yet again how the government plans to ruin their communities?

I was there. No one was rude - there were some strong opinions presented, but that was all. I can't help but wonder if this is the Chief Minister making sure he never has to consult with anyone on anything....
