In just nine months, the little red van by the lake with the big burgers and striking fairy lights has become something of an institution for lunchtime workers and hungry night owls.
But now it seems the ACT and federal governments are intent on spoiling the dinner party.
Brodburger, located in Bowen Park in Kingston, is the brainchild of professional Canberra chef Sasha Brodbeck and his partner Joelle Bou-Jaoude and opened in March this year. However, the business's future is now in doubt following a decision by the National Capital Authority to not renew its hawker's licence. Bowen Park is owned by the ACT Government but is classed as NCA designated land.
According to Ms Bou-Jaoude, Brodburger was given approval to operate on the site by the Department of Territory and Municipal Services. In July, however, the owners were advised by the NCA the business would need works approval.
Following a board meeting in October, the NCA advised Mr Brodbeck and Ms Bou-Jaoude that when the current hawkers licence expires at the end of this month they would be given until June 1 to vacate the site.
