Wanniassa clinic move pains patients

01 Aug, 2008 10:54 AM
Tuggeranong Valley residents fear their health care will suffer from ''profits over patients'' after it was revealed yesterday that Wanniassa Medical Centre would leave the area after 20 years in the community.

But the centre's owners, health corporation Primary Healthcare, say the move will give patients access to longer opening hours and a wider range of services, such as radiology and dental care.

Wanniassa Medical Centre is the second-largest practice in the ACT, employing seven full-time doctors. It will move to a larger medical centre, also owned by Primary Healthcare, in Phillip.

Staff and patients learned of the move on Wednesday and will be shifted to Phillip within the next two weeks.

The move comes just days after Attorney-General Simon Corbell launched an expanded GP surgery at Ainslie, praising the Government's work in primary health care.

ACT Health Minister Katy Gallagher says her hands are tied and she cannot control the movement of general practitioners.

But she would try to fast-track a planned free walk-in health centre if the Wanniassa closure led to a shortage of care. Primary Healthcare's general manager of medical centres, Henry Bateman, said moving the practice to Phillip allowed patients to receive care from 7am to 10pm every day of the week.

There were also concerns for the financial viability of the Wanniassa centre. The exodus of GPs has left southern Canberra residents worried about increasing pressure on health services, which could lead to overflows at hospital emergency departments.

Tuggeranong Community Council president Rosemary Lissimore said the valley could not afford to lose more doctors.

''We've had eight doctors leave us in Calwell and we've had one doctor in Richardson who closed down at Christmas,'' she said.

''We're still having houses built out here, there are still people moving into the area. When this sort of thing happens we end up with a lot of people going to the hospital emergency services.''

Kambah patient Sally McDonald said the closure was disgraceful. ''It's obvious that they're more interested in the profits than their patients.''

Mrs McDonald and her husband have been seeing their GP for more than 15 years and she said the move from Wanniassa would have a big impact.

''At [Phillip] it would be very awkward because I don't drive because of my chronic injury, so I'd have to get buses. Whereas here it takes me a few minutes to walk and it's very convenient,'' she said.

Mr Bateman said the new location was no more than 10 minutes' drive away and the company would provide a courtesy car to pick up patients.

''The doctors who are there will still conduct home visits, will still conduct nursing home visits,'' he said.

''Their records will still be available at the Phillip centre and they'll still be able to see their own GPs. There'll be continuity of care.''

Calwell mother Carolyn Burton said she feared the move to a big, busy walk-in centre would reduce the quality of her family's health care.

''I feel it will be a little less personal because I don't know if I'm guaranteed to see my doctor or one of the others. I like it the way it is where I can see the doctor who knows my family,'' she said.

Conder resident Max Hogan, 68, said he was concerned elderly patients would suffer the most from the relocation.

You have got to be kidding!!!!! This is the second time this will happen to me. I used to have a "family" doctor at the old Phillip medical centre. This doctor had been our family's doctor for 25 years until a few years ago when they shipped him off to the new Phillip wonder centre where I despise going to because there are always 100 people waiting and you can be their for hours! Now you are moving my new familys Doctor of 3 years to this place............People of Canberra deserve better than this. Where is doctor/patient relationship? Every time I used to go to Phillip, i must of seen 5 different doctors who knew nothing of my history! Katy Gallagher, pull your finger out!

I am a user of the Centre and I would like to know why was all the money spent on the development of the Wanniassa Health Centre in the first place. It has not been in full operation for very long. How many clients do the owners want the doctors to see in a day to raise profits. There is only so many appointments a doctor can do a day. Ahhhhhhhhhh money and profits.

The GPs working at Wanniassa do not want to move, they are being forced to by their employer, Primary HealthCare this is all the work of Primary HealthCare . Call them on (02) 9561 3300 to register a complaint! Send them letters to 30-38 Short St Leichhardt, NSW 2040 Make sure they know how disgraceful they are behaving!

Money hungry people are making it hard for everyday people to carry on with everyday life. Shame on you Bateman, not everything should be about making money!

I can't believe this. Once again profit comes before the welfare of the patient. Yes, why did they bother to upgrade the Wanniassa Health Centre? I have been seeing my family doctor for 27 years and they moved to the Wanniassa Health Centre just last year. Now they will be moving again. This is just not good enough. Obviously Tuggeranong people don't mean anything to the Labor Government.

Wanniassa Medical Centre move. I visit my usual doctor when I am sick or need to follow up on a pre existing ailment, and I can book a time that suits me. When I hadve finished I can walk across to the Chemist, maybe go into the supermarket or newsagent whilst waiting for my prescription. If I want my teeth looked at I go to a dentist not the medical centre. The Doctors who have bought into this will soon understand that they will stop being people of care and become production line fodder. Also the Doctors and the patients stop being people, they just become numbers.

Cannot believe this. Like others my family and I have been going to a doctor now at the centre for over 30 years. Very questionable that we will follow him to Phillip. Cannot understand this as the doctor recently noted with pride the medical facilities being built next door to the centre. What was the sense of all the work to build this centre and attract the facilities next door?

Do you know that Phillip Health Centre "do not have an appopintment booking service"? This means first in first serve (more likely...wait and wait!) system. Waiting time can be more than two hours! People don't visit doctor when they are healthy, happy and have the enegy to wait! Canberrian,do you deserved better than this?

The way that I see life is that you can't please everyone all of the time and so don't even try. All of you that talk about what is convenient for YOU well I hate to tell you but take another look cause the world doesn't revolve around YOU. It is an inconvenience to a lot of people and not one of us want to sit with 60 other people for 3 hours to see our GP's, we have the option to take our records to another doctor that is closer or more convenient to go to... take that option and stop complaining cause your doctor knew all your history, my family doctor retired (after over 20 years of seeing her) and I then had to choose another, we don't know if we are making the right choice but sometimes we have to make choices we would rather not. Just remember that the GP's are people too and they make decisions that are right for them and their circumstances not everyone elses, not their patients.. if we choose to change jobs we don't consider that it may affect a client or a colleague that we are leaving for greener pastures, it is to benefit US..

Golly Gosh... I used to go to the Doctors in Monash which got relocated to the Waniassa Centre and now They're expecting me to go to Ainsle... I don't think so!!! I live in Conder and already have to drive 15km to the doctor - now they expect to add 25km ontop of that! "Mr Bateman said the new location was no more than 10 minutes' drive away " tried doing a Whereis search from Wanniassa to Ainsle... It's 25.9km - unless you expect me to speed, I'm not getting there in less then 10 minutes. Goodbye to Healthcare in the Southside - I'm just going to stay at home and die now... Thanks heaps :)
