A woman accused of operating an illegal brothel from a rented Kaleen house has been bailed.
Wanna Wancha was one of two people arrested last night after police raided the Maribyrnong Ave property.
She was described in a police statement as a sex worker. Wancha has been charged with operating a brothel outside a prescribed premises.
Police said a male sex worker was also arrested and was detained by the Department of Immigration after being identified as an ``unlawful citizen’’. He was taken to the Villawood detention centre.
The prosecutor in the hearing opposed bail, citing Wancha as a flight risk. The woman, who has dual Thai and Australian citizenship, had her passports confiscated by police following her arrest. The court heard Wancha’s husband resides in Victoria, with police citing a potential for her to leave the territory.
Chief Magistrate John Burns said a conviction in the matter would likely result in a fine.
Wancha’s bail will require her to live at the Kaleen property and report to Belconnen police station twice per week.
She will return to court on September 24.
