Woman faces court over violent armed robbery

07 Oct, 2008 09:58 AM
A Red Hill woman smashed a car windscreen and tried to drag a man out of the vehicle during a violent armed robbery, a court has heard.

Lindsay Vincent, 24, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court yesterday charged with aggravated robbery and property damage, after police arrested her over the alleged assault on two men on September29.

Police allege that Vincent was with Timothy Noel Allen and a third person when he attacked two men with a hunting knife as they sat in their ute near the Red Hill shops in the early hours of the morning.

One of the men, Joshua McInnon, told police Allen had approached them demanding drugs or money.

He said Allen told him, ''Give me the drugs or I'll kill your friend.''

He then attacked him savagely with a large curved knife, stabbing him in the chest before going to the driver's side, where he stabbed the second victim, James Elliot, twice in the leg.

They said Vincent also appeared and screamed at them, took the keys, smashed the windscreen and tried to drag one of the men out of the passenger door, with the help of another man, who has not been identified. The three robbed the victims of up to 3g of the drug ice.

A police statement of facts said Mr McInnon had come within millimetres of being killed, and might never regain full use of the hand he used to fend Allen off.

Mr Elliot also sustained serious injuries.

Police responded to a call from a woman about 3.30am saying she had the injured men at her house and that Mr McInnon was bleeding profusely from the chest.

Police had earlier responded to a call about a fight occurring on Discovery Street, and later traced the call to Vincent's mobile.

She told them shortly afterwards that everything was fine and that she had exaggerated when she said there were guns and knives involved.

Later in the day, police conducted a search at Allen's house, where they found bloodstains and glass shards, as well as several knives and a taser gun.

The prosecution opposed bail.

Magistrate John Burns remanded Vincent in custody. She is due back in court later this month.

It is such a shame when I know the offender so well, he was always such a great person until he was introduced to this evil drug, I hope that the system see's the damage the drug has done and actually puts him away long enough to get him off the habbit and gives him the rehabilitation he really needs, I am so sorry that the public have had to see him like this. I am also sorry for the victims, I don't believe the penalties for drug supply are sending a strong enough message our laws need updating asap.

I trust that the alleged offenders, if found guilty, will be made responsible for any and all costs related to the injuries to the persons offended against, as a start.

"Ice use is an epidemic in Canberra, its time ppl realised this" Yeah government (&peope) are quite aware of this, as they were aware of the heroin epidemic in Canberra years ago... I remember in the early 90's how bad garema place was... how long did it take them to clean that up??? Like 15 years? It will take them just as long to tackle the ice problem as well.... After all the government have more important things to do right?

I bring to the attention of the ACT courts the following report of a change in sentencing-attitude in NSW: "In a series of decisions, the New South Wakes Court of Criminal Appeal (CCA) has criticised the focus on rehabilitation of offenders as excessive, and said: 'More significant penalties may be required.'
