Natural Songbirds

11 Jul, 2009 12:20 PM
They say it's lonely at the top, so why not form a trio? Country music stars Gina Jeffreys, Beccy Cole and Sara Storer joined forces to create Songbirds, the genre's equivalent to a supergroup.

''We're three little peas in a pod but we're all different,'' Jeffreys says. ''We have to stay friends. There's too much information to leak.''

Jeffreys was the first of the three to establish herself as a star.

After winning the Star Maker Quest at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 1991 she went on to win consecutive Golden Guitars and release platinum-selling albums. She met Cole some time in the early '90s and things went from there.

''She looked at me and I waved,'' Jeffreys says. ''I was becoming famous and she was just starting out. She thought I wasn't waving at her.''

The two exchanged numbers, ended up living together and were eventually bridesmaids at each other's weddings. Cole's marriage only lasted two years, but with typical humour she invited Jeffreys to be a bridesmaid at her divorce.
