Jeff Lindsay seems like a pretty normal sort of guy. He likes fishing, coaches his daughter's soccer team, does the cooking at home and has been married to the same woman for 23 years.

As the author of the best-selling Dexter novels, which spawned the equally successful television series, Lindsay's success may well be due to the fact that Dexter Morgan is a pretty normal sort of guy. If you ignore the fact that he likes killing people.

''I did try very hard to make him likeable,'' Lindsay says, on the eve of his Australian tour.

''The fact that I succeeded worries me sometimes but what's not to like about him?

''He's the ideal stepfather to those kids, he's a perfect co-worker, and he's always doing the right thing ... just every now and again he sneaks away and kills somebody.

''Nobody is perfect.''
