Showdown in the party room

18 Oct, 2009 09:55 AM
OPPOSITION Leader Malcolm Turnbull will face off with the Liberals and Nationals today at an extraordinary joint-party room meeting.

The special meeting comes one day before Parliament is due to resume sitting and is an attempt by Mr Turnbull to harness party unity on climate change.

After a horror two weeks of opinion polling, public internal brawling and a hosing down of a leadership challenge, Mr Turnbull and emissions trading spokesman Ian Macfarlane will present amendments to the Rudd Government's emissions trading scheme to a hostile party room for approval.

While the back bench is likely to approve the amendments, a significant number opposes the leadership cutting any deal with the Government before the climate change conference in Copenhagen in December.

Mr Turnbull also wants the legislation stalled until after the Copenhagen meetings until next year but has said the Coalition must be ready with their amendments as the Government is determined to ram the legislation through.

However, the Coalition will also discuss the option of a Senate motion that would delay the final vote on the Emissions Trading Scheme until next year.

For the motion to succeed in the Senate, the Coalition would need two extra votes and would appear to have them as Family First senator Steve Fielding and Independent Nick Xenophon have already said they are in favour of a vote next year.
