ACT basketball overhaul

23 Oct, 2009 09:49 AM
Basketball ACT will announce a major restructure of its men's basketball program today.

The Canberra Gunners will be licensed and run by a private group with the view of building stronger supporter and player bases across the capital.

The Canberra Times understands the new management structure could be the first step in resurrecting a Canberra team in the NBL.

The Canberra Cannons played in the NBL for 25 years before they went broke and were forced out of the league in 2003.

The Gunners play in the South East Australian Basketball League and are the premier Canberra men's team.

Canberra will continue to compete in the SEABL competition, with the private group running the team on behalf of Basketball ACT.

Basketball officials hope the announcement will attract more corporate support, opportunities for local players and develop and grow the game in the capital.
