Beatty primed for a tall challenge

27 Sep, 2009 10:54 AM
VETERAN Canberra Capitals centre Tracey Beatty insists she's ready to take on teenage giant Elizabeth Cambage despite her injury-interrupted WNBL preparation.

The Capitals wound up their pre-season campaign yesterday with a resounding 90-41 win over the Australian Institute of Sport.

However, Beatty played just 12 minutes and sat out the entire second half to ensure she was primed to face off against Cambage in the Capitals' season opener this week.

Canberra will play the Bulleen Boomers in a grand final rematch at the AIS Arena on Saturday.

Cambage, who is the only player taller than Beatty in the competition, graduated from the AIS earlier this year and the 203cm rising star signed on with the Boomers.

Capitals coach Carrie Graf will task Beatty and Marianna Tolo with shutting down Cambage for the clash.

And despite battling a persistent heal injury, Beatty said she was prepared to battle her younger rival.

''Training is still really limited for me and you can sit on a bike for an hour but it just doesn't compare to getting up and down the court,'' Beatty, who's 202cm tall, said.

''Once you're out there you don't really feel the injury and you're too busy chasing someone up the court.

''The preparation has been short, sharp and shiny and this was my first off season actually off and not training or playing.
