Caps shoot back into title race

19 Oct, 2009 09:49 AM
The Canberra Capitals' WNBL title aspirations are back on track after the defending champions trounced the Australian Institute of Sport 99-54 at Tuggeranong yesterday.

Despite resting key players the Capitals cruised to victory and ensured they remained in touch with the competition leaders.

The win was the Capitals' 25th consecutive at Southern Cross Stadium. Canberra was simply too big and strong for an inexperienced institute side now firmly cemented at the bottom of the ladder.

While the 45-point win lifted Canberra into the top five for the first time this season, coach Carrie Graf said her team still had ample room for improvement.

The Capitals play two of the competition powerhouses this weekend, clashing with the Sydney Uni Flames in Sydney on Friday and the Adelaide Lightning in Tuggeranong on Sunday.

''Sydney has got the size and we have to find a way to combat that we didn't rebound that well [against the AIS],'' Graf said. ''We managed to win it, but we didn't dominate.

''Those two teams are right up there and even though we got this win, Sydney and Adelaide are going to be the biggest weekend of our season.''
