What started as an unrealistic pipe dream over a bottle of chardonnay 10 days ago ended in reality today - Lauren Jackson is officially back in town.
Miss Jackson, the world's best female basketballer, has signed a WNBL contract with the Canberra Capitals which will see her play with the club for the next three months.
Her asking price of $220,000 was reached late Tuesday night when Actew chairman John Mackay, who had been heading a consortium of local businesses to get Jackson back to town, raised the final $25,000 to meet the required amount.
The businesses involved are ACTTAB, Land Development Agency, ACTEW Corp, Tenandahalf Catering, ActewAGL, TransACT, Doma/Realm/Colliers, the ACT Brumbies, the Canberra Raiders, CIT, Canberra Investment Corporation, the Hellenic Club, Chris Michalis Property Holdings, NDH Property Services and the Liangis Foundation.
Miss Jackson received a clearance from her contract with Russian club Spartak Moscow through the International Basketball Federation early this morning.
She officially signed her WNBL contract this afternoon.
The 28-year-old became the hottest free agent in women's basketball when she signalled her intention to opt out of a two year deal with Spartak, following the death of team owner Shabtai von Kalmanovich on November 2.
Miss Jackson, who is still recovering from a back injury, has not yet finalised a date for her return to the court with the Capitals.
It is likely to be either December 5 in Bulleen or December 12 in Perth.
Her first game in Canberra is expected to be on December 18.
Miss Jackson was amazed at what had transpired over the past 10 days.
``The support I've received has been overwhelming,'' she said.
``I never imagined people would get behind me like this. The fact that I'm recognised, it's beyond anything I've ever dealt with in my life.
``A week and a half ago I was sitting having dinner and a bottle chardonnay with [Capitals coach] Carrie [Graf] and I told her that I'd love to play here but that was obviously unrealistic.
``But she was like `mate, let me make a few call' and sure enough Canberra jumped on board and well, here I am.''
