Jackson set to sign today

25 Nov, 2009 07:24 AM
Basketball superstar Lauren Jackson is expected back on court with the Canberra Capitals in less than three weeks, after she was released from her contract with Russian club Spartak yesterday.

Jackson will today sign with the Capitals for the remainder of the season, leaving the club just hours to register her with the WNBL before the cut-off for new players.

While Canberra was still $25,000 short of Jackson's $220,000 asking price at the close of business yesterday, her manager Bruce Kaider said the deal would go ahead.

''We've come to an agreement in principle with the Capitals and we're really comfortable with what the Capitals have come up with,'' Kaider said.

''We've got every confidence that they'll deliver all the things they've said they're going to deliver.

''With that taken into consideration we've committed to Lauren playing with the Canberra Capitals for the remainder of the WNBL season.''

Actew chairman John Mackay is heading a consortium tasked with raising the funds for Jackson's return. He is confident he will raise the final $25,000 required to make the contract binding by tonight.

If the consortium fails to raise the required funds the Capitals will release Jackson from her contract, allowing her to sign a more lucrative deal with a European club.

Mackay was confident that wouldn't be necessary.

''We're a long way down the track ... I'd say we'd have the money by [tonight],'' he said.

Jackson is currently in Canberra using the Australian Institute of Sport facilities to recover from stress fractures in her back.

Kaider said she was aiming to be back on court within a fortnight, making her available for the Capitals' round 11 clash with Perth on December 12.

That would allow the 27-year-old to play up to 13 games for Canberra if it makes the grand final.

Capitals coach Carrie Graf hailed Jackson's pending signing as akin to an NBL team recruiting former Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan while at his peak. She said the $220,000 fee was unders for a player of Jackson's standing.

''That's well below half the starting offers in Europe for her, so we're not even in the European ballpark in terms of the dollars for her,'' Graf said. ''She is the Michael Jordan of women's basketball.

''She's one of the highest earners in women's basketball in the world and we're coming in way below what her earning capacity as a basketballer is.''

Jackson's return will provide a huge boost to the Capitals, who are fifth almost halfway through the season. The defending champions are also likely to have last season's MVP Abby Bishop back from a knee injury within the next fortnight.

Jackson led the Capitals to four titles in 1999-2000, 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2005-2006 and Graf said having her and Bishop on court would boost Canberra's title bid.

''If you put Bishop back in our mix soon and get Lauren Jackson we're right back in there as title favourites,'' Graf said.

''It will be a pretty nice addition if we can make it happen, to add our MVP from last year and a former league MVP and one of the world's greatest players to our roster.

''Pre-Christmas we'd like have them both on court.''

Jackson was unavailable for comment yesterday, but Kaider said a major motivation for her return to Canberra was her belief the Capitals could win the championship.

The murder of Spartak boss Shabtai von Kalmanovich prompted Jackson to seek a release.

Absolutely fabulous news. Can't wait to see Lauren on the court again. What a bonus for our young players to have her here. Go Lauren, Go Caps.
