No time for Capitals to lick wounds

05 Oct, 2009 08:52 AM
Canberra Capitals skipper Kellie Abrams says her team needs to get more desperate if it wants to open its winning account in Queensland this weekend.

The Capitals stumbled in the first game of their WNBL title defence, losing 88-73 to the Bulleen Boomers at the AIS Arena last Saturday.

But Canberra has no time to lick its wounds with a two-game road trip against the Logan Thunder on Friday and the Townsville Fire on Saturday.

The Capitals were far from their best against the Boomers and a lack of height thwarted their bid to kick-start their bid to win a seventh title.

Abrams admitted the performance was not up to scratch and said her team needed to regroup quickly to avoid a dismal start to the season.

Bulleen stamped itself as the team to beat this season with the resounding win led by Elizabeth Cambage and Elyse Penaluna.

While the Boomers skipped out to an early lead, the Capitals hit just one of their first nine shots before fighting back into the match.

However, just two Canberra players Nat Hurst and Jess Bibby scored double-figure points.

With Tracey Beatty fouled out after just 10 minutes on the court, Marianna Tolo was left to defend Cambage and Penaluna.
