Spotlight on Bibby as Caps chase eighth title

08 Sep, 2010 08:38 AM
New Capitals skipper Jess Bibby is prepared to get ''cranky'' if that's what's required to secure Canberra a record eighth WNBL championship.

And the veteran guard has backed the Capitals to rise to the top of the league for the third consecutive season, despite their interrupted preparation.

A new-look Capitals roster started pre-season training at Belconnen last night. Bibby will take over the captaincy reins from the retired Kellie Abrams and she says her goal for the 2010-11 season is simple win another grand final.

''I think it's an exciting time for the club and we're definitely going to challenge for that three-peat,'' Bibby said.

''Captaining the team was something I never set out to do it's a huge thrill and honour. But for me, it's about winning championships.

''Absolutely we can [win it this season]. We sat down and had a look at the rosters of the other teams in the league and we're probably not the most talented side.

''But my first year in Canberra we weren't favourites to win the championship ... we can definitely grab that three-peat.''

The Capitals have finalised their squad for their championship defence. Lauren Jackson, Abby Bishop, Kellie Abrams, Nat Hurst, Chantella Perera and Tracey Beatty are gone.

Michaela Dalgleish and Michelle Cosier (nee Musselwhite) are back after a year out of the game with Suzy Batkovic, Alison Lacey, Nicole Hunt, Rebecca Haynes joining the most successful club in WNBL history.

CAPITALS ROSTER
