ACT vice-captain Leonie Coleman scored a slashing 119 to power the Meteors to an 89-run win over the South Australian Scorpions at Manuka Oval yesterday.
Wicketkeeper Coleman posted her first century, on her way to 119 from 111 balls.
Coleman, opening with Laura Wright, gave the Meteors the perfect start, rushing to 106 from 20 overs before Wright fell for 48.
The wicket brought captain Kris Britt to the crease, and she combined with Coleman for a 130-run second-wicket stand.
Coleman slapped 14 fours in the course of her innings, while Britt struck 65 runs from 62 balls.
The pair departed in the 38th and 39th overs, leaving Lisa Kuschert (38 not out) and Em Preston (25 not out) to guide the Meteors to 3-309 after 50overs.
South Australia began its chase well, opener Shelley Nitschke continuing her form with the bat to score 66 runs from 67 balls.
The Scorpions rushed past 100 with the fall of one wicket, before a batting collapse saw them lose five wickets for 26 runs. They batted on bravely but were no longer in the contest, limping to 9-220 in reply.
ACT coach Martin Garoni said the Meteors' brave chase in Saturday's loss to the Scorpions had set up yesterday's win.
''The top order set us on the right path today and then the girls bowled beautifully,'' Garoni said. ''Keeping them down to five an over at the start of the innings meant they were always chasing their tails from there.''
Coleman was named player of the match.
''I'm seeing the ball pretty well at the moment so it's good to be hitting it well, do what I can to get the team in a good position,'' Coleman said.
''I think we've set ourselves up well here and are now in a good position for the rest of the season.
''I think other teams always thought we had the potential to do well this season but we've now shown that we're not here to make up the numbers in the competition, we're here to win it.''
The Meteors next play defending premier NSW at Manuka Oval on November 20.
