Haddin set for club comeback

21 Oct, 2009 09:38 AM
Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin will make his return to cricket from injury in Sydney this weekend.

Haddin has been sidelined with a broken finger, suffered during the Ashes series, and will return for Eastern Suburbs in the Sydney grade cricket competition on Saturday.

Haddin had surgery on the finger in August and had hoped to return to national duties for the ICC Champions Trophy one-day tournament last month or the team's tour of India for seven one-day internationals later this month.

He is now aiming to be fit for the first Test against the West Indies, starting in Brisbane on November26.

''I got the all-clear on Monday so I've started hitting balls and had a catch [yesterday] and everything's been good,'' Haddin said.

''I'm going to play grade cricket this weekend for Eastern Suburbs and see how it responds there, then look to maybe make a comeback for NSW [in the one-day competition against Western Australia in Sydney] on November1.

''I've reacted well to the surgery and treatment so I'm just looking forward to testing it out and see how far I can take it.''

Looking to the long-term, Haddin revealed he was about to sign a deal with an Indian Premier League club.

While not willing to divulge details, Haddin, who has avoided the IPL until now, said he was excited to enter the Twenty20 competition.

''Twenty20, I've always said I'm interested in the game, I think it's great for cricket and I've always wanted to get over to the IPL.

''By the time the IPL started I was just starting my Test career, I'd waited nearly 10 years to get a crack at Test cricket so I just wanted to make sure my focus was Test cricket.

''But now the time is right to get into Twenty20 and I'm really looking forward to it, enjoying all the hype around it.

''We're looking around at clubs, there's a deal nearly done, it's basically being finalised now, we'll know more over the coming weeks.

''I won't be giving away Test cricket though, I still see it as the No1 in all forms of the game.''

Haddin is in Canberra to attend Diwali the Indian festival of lights celebrations tonight.

Haddin is the special guest at the inaugural dinner, organised by the Australia India Business Council, which will include Bollywood dancers, traditional music and a charity auction.

All proceeds will go to the Haddin-supported ACT Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group.

Haddin met Indian high commissioner to Australia Sujatha Singh yesterday to discuss tonight's event.

Singh explained the significance of the festival to Hindus, while also taking time to discuss the importance of cricket in Australian-Indian relations.

''I can't wait to tell my family I met Brad,'' she said. ''I follow India and Australian cricket pretty closely.

''It's great [Haddin is special guest at the dinner], we think he's a huge asset for the function and very happy to have him.''
