Meteors land memorable opening blow at Manuka

24 Oct, 2009 09:46 AM
The ACT Meteors made their first match of the Women's National Cricket League a memorable one yesterday when they smashed Tasmania by 10 wickets at Manuka Oval.

In their first ever game in the national competition, the Meteors held Tasmania to 6-103 off its 20 overs.

The ACT opening pair of Leonie Coleman and Laura Wright then cruised to the total with 33 balls to spare.

After putting out the hype in the pre-season that they would play exciting cricket the Meteors delivered.

From the acrobatic dives of Em Preston and Charlotte Anneveld in the field to the winning runs that Coleman smashed to the boundary, the 200 enthusiastic fans at the ground loved every minute.

Tasmania also made its WNCL debut yesterday and looked dangerous early when former Australian player Mel Jones top-scored with a quickfire 51 off 42 balls.

But the Meteors bowling performance, led by captain Kris Britt who captured 3-12 off three overs including Jones's wicket, was strong enough to hold Tasmania to just over the century mark.

Then entered Coleman. The diminutive former Australian wicketkeeper didn't waste time and smashed Katelyn Fryett for four on the second ball.
