Meteors open door for Coleman to star

20 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM
It worked for Adam Gilchrist and now ACT Meteors wicketkeeper Leonie Coleman is reaping the benefits after moving up the order to open the batting.

Coleman had to be convinced to open this season, but has been Canberra's form player in the first two rounds of the Women's National Cricket League Twenty20 and one-day competitions. Meteors coach Martin Garoni said she had a point to prove when she faced her former team, the NSW Breakers, in a Twenty20 match today.

''She wasn't given an opportunity like that [opener] in NSW as she batted down the order, but she's a dynamic player with the bat in her hand,'' Garoni said.

''She had to be talked into it, but once we explained just how well her and Laura [Wright] work together and how good it would be for the team, she accepted and they've just been fantastic so far.

''I don't think they've had an opening partnership of anything less than 40.''

Coleman hit 70 off 48 balls in her Meteors Twenty20 debut against Tasmania to help the ACT to a 10-wicket win, followed by 33 against South Australia.

In one-day games against South Australia, she made 29 before posting her maiden century (119) in a WNCL career which has spanned 15 years.

Coleman believed the Meteors could upset the star-studded Breakers today.

''If we can just focus on the way we want to play, what we do well then I think we are a chance,'' she said. ''We're in great form and our batting line-up goes right through until 11, so if we can get that good start and just do the things we know we can, we can certainly upset them.''

This weekend's three matches are the last time Canberra fans have the chance to see the Meteors play at home this summer.
