QUEANBEYAN continued its rise up the ACT cricket two-day ladder yesterday, belting Eastlake by an innings and 55 runs at Manuka Oval.
Queanbeyan gained 10 points for the outright result, which moved it into third place on 34 points, leapfrogging Wests-UC (28), which is now fifth. It kept the club in touch with joint-leaders Weston Creek and Tuggeranong (36).
Queanbeyan captain Mark Higgs said his side's season was going from strength to strength after a difficult beginning.
"We had a tough start, we lost our first couple of games, but after that, in the two-day competition, we haven't looked back since," Higgs said.
"We've had a draw and the rest wins and a couple of outrights to boot, so it's put us in really good stead.
"It's pushed us well up the table and we're looking pretty good."
Adam Heading's 131 set up Queanbeyan's victory - the team compiling 357 for its first innings before Dean Southwell (4-42) and Higgs (4-17) set about demoralising equal last-placed Eastlake's batsmen, who were bowled out for 105 in their second innings.
The side's gathering momentum in the two-day competition could result in it overcoming a tough final three rounds before pushing for the premiership.
"We've got Wests, Tuggeranong and ANU [to come] so we've got a bit of a tough draw but if we want to win the competition, if we can play well against those sort of teams, going into the finals, then we'll be tough to beat," Higgs said. The former South Australian and NSW all-rounder said Queanbeyan's steady progress was a credit to club stalwarts Southwell, Stephen Frost, Peter Coleborne and Dean Mansfield.
"For us, we're still growing as a club and a first-grade team and we've still got a lot to prove to people but it's a one step at a time sort of thing," he said.
"The last few years have been pretty tough for us and we're starting to play some cricket again."
In other ACT cricket two-day games yesterday, ANU (30 points) beat Wests-UC (28) outright at ANU North Oval, and overtook them into fourth position.
ANU quick Nathan Madsen (5-45) did the bulk of the damage, rolling Wests-UC for 118 in their second innings to set up the nine-wicket win.
Weston Creek maintained its position atop the leaderboard after beating Norths by four wickets at Stirling Oval.
Half-centuries from Peter Radford (89), Cade Brown (61) and Byron Field (51*) helped the Creek comfortably haul down Norths' first-innings score of 267.
Tuggeranong kept pace, defeating Ginninderra by seven wickets at Chisholm Oval. Ashton May (94) top-scored for Tuggeranong after Adam Ritchard (5-51) had earlier mopped up Ginninderra's first innings of 216.
