Queanbeyan will aim to spin its way
into ACT Cricket's first grade final
when it plays Tuggeranong in a semi-
final at Kingston Oval today.
Queanbeyan captain Mark Higgs is
confident his line-up can get more
turn on Kingston Oval today.
''I don't think they are as strong in
the spin department,'' Higgs said.
''It will depend on whether the
pitch at Kingston has much turn in it,
but I think our spin line-up will be an
advantage.''
Apart from the spin, the match is
likely to be the battle of the ACT's
most talented under-19 players.
Tuggeranong named an
unchanged line-up from last week's
draw with Wests-UC, which includes
five ACT under-19 reps.
Shane Devoy, Jason Behrendorff,
Tom Thornton, Jason Floros and
Ashton May were part of the under-
19 team that finished second at the
national titles last December,
Thornton finished the season as
the leading runscorer in first grade,
with 675 runs from 16 matches at an
average of 45.
Devoy has taken 26 wickets at 19.5
from 17 matches, with the best
match figures of 7-66.
But Queanbeyan has two of the
brightest young prospects in
16-year-old Jordan McLennan and
15-year-old Alex Ross, who together
gave Queanbeyan a chance in the
Twenty20 final against Wests.
''I think in most aspects it's a great
sign for the competition,'' Tuggeranong
captain David Jeffrey said.
''That we have these young guys,
as keen as mustard, coming through
I think it's great for the future.''
Higgs believes McLennan and Ross
are some of the most talented
cricketers in their age groups.
''I didn't think they'd have an issue
stepping up to first grade, it's just
more the mental side of things,
which they have actually done really
well,'' Higgs said.
''I think Jordan has already done
well at the under-19 level against
guys that are a lot older than him,
Alex is still growing, so not really sure
how he might end up, but he's
certainly shown he's capable so far.''
In the other semi, Weston Creek
has made three changes from last
week, with Duncan Brede, Adam
Rynehart and Christian Hanna
returning. Richard Southerton,
Daniel Mowbray and Elliot Morschel
will make way. Wests-UC hasn't
made any changes from last round.
