YARRALUMLA rider Gracie Elvin hopes she can keep pace with some of Australia's most promising cyclists in the all-female Tour de Femme today.
In her first race for more than a month, Elvin and an expected record field of almost 700 riders will set off in the 20th Tour de Femme, which starts at the Canberra Yacht Club at 9am.
But while most simply hope they can complete the 20km course without crashing, Elvin wants to test herself against the Australian Institute of Sport development squad. Cycling Australia and AIS coach Martin Barras's 14-member squad will race today.
Elvin wants to continue her good form in the Canberra race. Since first competing in the tour in 2005, the 21-year-old has finished in the top 10 every time, including fourth last year.
She raced at the mountain bike World Cup round in Austria in September, but decided not train for a month to rejuvenate.
''I've been slowly getting back on the bike to get fit for summer,'' Elvin said.
''I've heard the AIS girls are coming so hopefully I can get in the top five again.
''I don't know if I can win it this year; it's more about getting out there and being involved.''
