A-League bid needs foundation members

07 Aug, 2008 08:12 AM
Canberra's A-League bid leader Ivan Slavich is confident he will meet all the FFA's criteria in his A-League4Canberra bid, it's now just about getting foundation members on board.

Last night a group of almost 100 A-League ambassadors - from clubs and associations across the ACT as well as Cooma and the Southern Tablelands - met with Slavich and the marketing team to discuss the bid process so far.

Slavich told supporters he had another $500,000 investor on board in Peter Sarris.

ZOO advertising's Pawl Cubbin has already signed up to one $500,000 block while Slavich plans to make available another five half million dollar blocks, with each constituting one place on the Canberra teams board. He also said he was in talks with three others about the remaining blocks.

Slavich said he was close to securing a multi-million dollar deal with the ACT government and he was confident of securing bipartisan support from the opposition.

He said he would ensure there was enough financial backing but it was now up to the Canberra community to help out.

The A-League4canberra group is offering 5000 foundation memberships at $200 each, to raise $1million of the $6million required as start-up costs.

''It's very important that we have those foundation memberships because one, it raises the money, but two, if we turn up to the FFA next week and say we have 200 members, they'll say, well these guys aren't serious. If we get 5000, it sends a very clear message to the FFA that we are serious.''

As of last night there were 271 foundation members registered.

Slavich is aiming for 1000 before he meets with the FFA next week.

A-League4canberra foundation memberships are available from Service One Members Banking branches and at A-League4canberra.com.au.

Slavich will officially meet with FFA officials, including chief executive Ben Buckley on August 14.

The FFA meet on August 27 where they are expected to formally induct Townsville and the Gold Coast into the A-League for the 2009/10 season and then discuss prospective bids for the 2010/11 season.

Slavich said he would make his official presentation to the FFA board after August 14 but before the board meeting.

The presentation by Slavich will cover all facets of the FFA's guidelines.

''It includes everything from the financial backers, a five year financial projection, what territory you are talking about, how it ties in with the youth league, what your development plans are, your board structure, company structure, who the senior board members are, prospective coaches, prospective players, it's very comprehensive,'' Slavich said.
