Aussie Sim one win from instant US PGA Tour promotion

18 May, 2009 12:58 PM
Young Australian golfer Michael Sim is one win away from instant promotion to the US PGA Tour after claiming his second Nationwide Tour victory of the season.

Sim, 24, won the BMW Charity Open on Sunday when he defeated Argentina's Fabian Gomez at the first sudden-death play-off hole in Greenville, South Carolina.

The West Australian went into the last round with a three shot lead and his two-under-par 69 was enough to match Gomez who had posted a 65 for a 22-under-264 total while playing in the group in front of Sim.

Sim added the title to the one he collected at the Stonebrae Classic last month and a third victory this season would earn him an immediate ``battlefield'' promotion to the US PGA Tour.

Having narrowly missed another victory when beaten in a play-off at his previous start at the Athens Regional Foundation Classic, Sim has now extended his lead on the money list to record levels.

The victory was worth $US126,000 ($A168,000) and pushed his season total to a $US367,417 ($A489,800) in just seven starts.

He leads the next best earner - Garth Mulroy - by $US211,136 ($A281,500).

Never before in the 20-year history of the secondary tour has the distance between the top two players been as great.

``I had a great off-season and I sat down with my coaches and set some goals for the year,'' Sim told PGATour.com.

``I hadn't really been doing that lately. My biggest goal was to try and win three times. I also wanted to finish No. 1 on the money list.''
