Victorian golf star Robert Allenby says he has doused his explosive temperament and will take a new tranquil spirit into the 2009 US PGA Tour season.
And he believes that he still has time to crown his career with a major title, despite the fact that he turns 38 this year.
Allenby finished 11th on the US money list last season but has been without a win for seven straight years and made 27 of 28 cuts.
But he is now more relaxed about his game, a change he credits to working with English-born ''life coach'' Peter Crone.
''What he does is remove all the crap, the things that you worry about that aren't true,'' Allenby said.
''I've been working on the present instead of worrying about what I did two years ago or what could happen in the future.
''It's really helped my golf because it doesn't matter if I hit it in the trees left it's only a golf shot. In the past it's always been, 'Oh, you idiot! What did you do that for?'
Allenby admits he has been hampered by his fiery temperament on the course, which he says comes from trying too hard.
''I've always been very competitive, I just hate to lose. I hate to make mistakes but now it's like, 'Hey it's all right, because I'm only human'.
Allenby has won 19 times, including four times in the US, but has not tasted success there since 2001.
The season opens in Maui, Hawaii, this week with the Mercedes Championship.
''It's been tough or it was tough. Now it's no big deal because it is what it is,'' Allenby said.
''I know that my time will come pretty soon. It's not from lack of trying, that's for sure.''
Allenby is also philosophical about the absence of a major from his CV.
''There are a lot better players than me who haven't won one, though I feel like I'm getting closer,'' Allenby said.
Allenby heads a list of 12 Australians who won enough prizemoney last year to keep their tour cards the others are Adam Scott, Mat Goggin, Rod Pampling, Aaron Baddeley, Peter Lonard, Nick O'Hern, Steve Elkington, John Senden and Nathan Green.
Marc Leishman, Jarrod Lyle, Greg Chalmers and Aron Price also all gained promotions from the Nationwide Tour while James Nitties earned his players card at the US Tour School late last year. AAP
