Millar happy to be sideshow to Woods

09 Nov, 2009 08:55 AM
Matt Millar knows it's easy to get caught up in the Tiger Woods circus which will engulf the Australian Masters at Melbourne's Kingston Heath Golf Club this week.

So the Canberra golfer just hopes he can avoid it long enough to sneak under the radar, rise up the leaderboard and surprise the rest of the field.

The World No1 will attract a bumper crowd of 100,000 spectators for the four-day tournament.

But while Woods will have a 25,000-strong entourage watching his every move, Millar is content with a much smaller support crew.

As the Woods euphoria sweeps the course, Millar will have fiancee Rebecca Ashley, caddy Scott Peisker and a handful of family and friends by his side for the entire tournament or at least he hopes.

''I've got a few people coming down with me, but you never know what is going to happen when Tiger's around.'' Millar said.

''There's a lot of people from [Canberra] golf clubs going down to watch Tiger so I might run into a few of them as well.

''I don't get too much coverage anyway and it's good to fly under the radar I can just go about my business.''

While the rest of Australia was eagerly waiting for the world's best golfer to arrive, Millar was fine-tuning his game at Gold Creek Country Club last week.

Woods will fly into Melbourne today after the Victorian Government and golf officials forked out $US3million ($A3.26million) in appearance fees.

His first visit to Australia since 1998 is expected to pump $19million into the Victorian economy in his five-day stay.

Millar has just completed his European season and pocketed $25,000 when he finished third at the Midea China Classic last month.

However, his total yearly earnings are like pocket change to Woods who has already won $A11.5million this season.

But while the 33-year-old conceded he was unlikely to topple Woods this week, he was more optimistic about forcing his way into the top 15 at the Masters.

''I've been putting much better lately, my short game has sort of returned and I feel like I have a lot more control,'' Millar said.

''My ball control has improved a lot and I feel like I'm giving myself opportunities.

''You go out there to win, but sometimes it doesn't happen that way so you set mini goals along the way. I'd be happy if I could get into the top 10 or top 15 that's where I feel I should be.''

The 33-year-old will play in the Masters, NSW PGA, NSW Open, Australian Open and the Australian PGA tournaments while he's back in Australia.

Millar is the only Canberra golfer in the 144-strong field which begins on Thursday.
