The first thing trainer Leon Macdonald wants is a barrier somewhere closer to the inside than the outside to enable the Victoria Derby winner to get a comfortable run.

Rebel Raider drew barrier 13 of 13 in the Hobartville Stakes and finished 13th, then 17 of 18 in the Randwick Guineas and finished 17th.

''With a bit of luck we'll draw inside a couple this time,'' Macdonald said.

''He still hasn't been able to be ridden the way he wants.

''He got further forward early in the Randwick Guineas than he liked because of the barrier and they were a bit too nippy for him over 1600m.

''Now that he's up to 2000m, hopefully he can get a better run in the race.

''I'm very happy with him, he's still improving. The plan has always been the Derby and that hasn't changed.''

Race jockey Clare Lindop will make a flying visit from Adelaide to ride Rebel Raider in trackwork at Randwick today.

Randwick Guineas winner Metal Bender is also among the 15 entries for Saturday's Group1 Rosehill Guineas along with placegetters Rock Kingdom and Caymans.

Metal Bender is trained by Jack Denham while his son Allan prepares Tobique, fourth in the Randwick Group1 and a nomination for the Rosehill feature.

ACTTAB Sportsbet has Metal Bender at the top of its market for the AJC Australian Derby (2400m) on April 11 at $4.80 ahead of Predatory Pricer ($6.50) who runs in the Tulloch Stakes on Saturday week as his lead-up.

Rich Endowment is a $151 chance for the Derby but trainer Guy Walter is hoping that will change after the Rosehill Guineas.

Walter admits he is throwing the winner of two of his past three starts in the deep end but believes he deserves a chance against topline company.

''It's ambitious but he is a horse with plenty of stamina and the breeding to be a stayer,'' Walter said. ''They are only three once.

''His last win at Newcastle was over older horses and was very impressive.'' AAP
