No gain off handicaps: Payne

11/07/2008 1:00:00 AM
The ratings system of handicapping has come under fire in recent months, with trainer David Payne among those not so much against it as baffled by it.

The Payne-trained Eagle Rock went up two kilos for winning a ratings 79 race on June 14 and remained on 59kg for tomorrow's rating 81 event after finishing sixth last start.

The three-year-old will instead contest the Lonhro Welter (1200m) in which he was given 54kg and will carry 52.5kg after Matthew Palmer's claim.

''He just got too much weight so he will run in the Welter,'' Payne said.

''I don't understand the ratings and how he can get 59 kilos again.

''It's too hard. But the horse is fresh and well and should go well.''

Adding to Payne's woes is the construction still going on at his new headquarters at Rosehill.

Payne and his fellow Randwick trainers have been relocated while the premier racecourse is in the hands of World Youth Day.

While others will move back in late August, Payne plans to remain at Rosehill.

''I will be staying at Rosehill which will be the best facility when it's finished,'' he said. ''Unfortunately it's not finished yet.''

Payne's three other runners at Canterbury will all be ridden by Jeff Lloyd, with Lap Of Honour to contest the March Hare Hcp (1550m), Sequinella the Star Dancer Hcp (1900m) and Bondit the Canterbury Betting Auditorium Hcp (1250m).

Lloyd, who emigrated from South Africa last year, is currently holding down third position on the Sydney jockeys' premiership behind Blake Shinn and Nash Rawiller, who have a big break.

But with Hugh Bowman and Dan Nikolic just two behind Lloyd on 38 wins, he will be out to consolidate his position after missing last weekend due to a riding commitment in South Africa.

Payne is in a battle for fourth position in the training ranks on 28 wins, one behind Bart Cummings who is 10 behind Chris Waller.

Palmer can enhance his claims for the apprentices' title tomorrow with Mitchell Beadman serving a suspension and Peter Wells appealing one on Monday. AAP
