THE thrill of having his horse look a winning Caulfield Cup chance at the top of the home straight yesterday was ''out of this world'' for Jason Mathie, the Canberra-based part-owner of Vigor.
''I reckon we were the loudest people on course coming round that last bend,'' an elated Mathie said after the $2.5million race, in which Vigor finished third.
''It was unbelievable. Absolutely outstanding. It was unreal.''
Mathie and his cousin Justin's Titan Thoroughbreds syndication business celebrated its biggest result yesterday when Vigor finished 234 lengths behind Viewed and half a length in arrears of Roman Emperor in the Caulfield Cup.
It was their first Group 1 place-getter.
While Bart Cummings was the man of the moment in training his seventh Caulfield Cup winner, Mathie couldn't contain his excitement at finishing third.
''To have all the family here, all the people who have been involved in Titan, to have them all together is amazing,'' he said.
''We just finished third in a Caulfield Cup. Now it's fingers crossed we get to the big one and enjoy the ride again.''
The big one Mathie is referring to is, of course, the $5.65million Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 3. Vigor is 32nd in the Cup's ballot order. Once final declarations are taken in 13 days time, the top 24 horses will run in Australia's biggest race.
