Rough road to Canberra Stadium

05 Nov, 2009 08:22 AM
Usually Jay Marmont would churn out hour after hour on his motorcycle leading up to a championship supercross event.

But this week has been different.

Despite shaping as one of the main contenders for round four of the Australasian Supercross Championship at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night, the Wollongong rider's focus this week has been on his baby daughter Lila.

Health issues forced the seven-month-old into surgery last week where doctors were forced to insert a feeding tube into Lila's stomach.

After spending most of last week with his wife and daughter at the Sydney Children's Hospital, Marmont flew to Perth on the weekend to contest the last round of the Australasian series.

Since returning from the 6500km round trip, the 26-year-old has had only one thing on his mind.

''I've taken the week off just to spend time with my wife and my baby and it's been fun,'' Marmont said.

''My daughter ... she's a fighter and she's a battler and she definitely gives me inspiration and makes me go out there on the weekend and want to do it for her as well.

''It was a hard weekend, even after getting the fairly decent result I was still in two different minds.

''My mind was still back here and wanted to be with her and my wife.''

The Yamaha rider plans to jump back on the bike today in preparation for Saturday night's supercross event, which will be attended by his wife and daughter.

Last weekend's gutsy third-place finish in Perth kept Marmont within striking distance of points leader Dan Reardon who sits atop the open championship standings on 69 points, two clear of second-placed Chad Reed.

Marmont is in third spot on 63points after his opening-round win in Tasmania, fourth in Geelong and last week's third in Perth.

The Geelong result was the first time in 112 years that Marmont hadn't finished on the podium, which has spurred him on to lift for the rest of the season.

''I hadn't dropped a podium the whole supercross series last year and I didn't drop a podium in every [Australian] motocross round this year,'' Marmont said.

''I wasn't up there giving my podium speech [in Geelong] so it was a little bit different for me, but at the same time it made me work hard during the week and made me try and get back up there again.''

About 6000 tickets have been sold for Saturday's event with organisers expecting up to 10,000 spectators.

Open competitors will run in two 10-lap heats with the top nine riders in each heat advancing to the final.

The 450cc and 250cc categories will also be contested.
