Former Canberra Olympic gymnast Alexandra Croak will make her Olympic Games diving debut after being named yesterday in the nine-person Australian team for Beijing.
The 23-year-old becomes the 13th Australian athlete to compete in two different sports at the Games, after competing for the Australian gymnastics team in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
''It was a difficult move for me, but it was what I wanted to do. I just loved gymnastics so going there was everything I dreamed of doing,'' Croak said.
''I think I adapted pretty well. There are technical differences but there are also some similarities.
''It's hard to make a direct comparison between gymnastics and diving, but your body awareness, flexibility and control definitely cross over the two.''
In Melbourne 2006, she became the first Australian woman to compete at consecutive Commonwealth Games in different sports, an effort she used to step up her campaign to qualify for Beijing.
In May this year, she gained sixth place at the Canada Cup in Montreal in the 10m platform, with an overall score of 339.20.
''I will be solely focusing on Beijing now. If I can do a personal best performance, then a medal isn't out of sight,'' she said.
''I have a new dive in my routine, the Back 3, which is proving a bit difficult but I have a couple of months to work on it so I am confident.''
At the Olympic qualifiers in Hobart, Croak beat Athens gold medallist Chantelle Newbery to place second in the 10m platform.
Newbery, 31, will compete in the 3m springboard at her third Olympic Games since her debut in Sydney 2000.
She returned to the pool in July after taking 14 months out for the birth of her second child.
''I'm just so excited and relieved to make the team. It was such a rush coming back from having a baby so now I just feel relief that I can concentrate on the main event,'' Newbery said.
Croak qualified alongside Melissa Wu, 16, in the 10m platform individual for Beijing.
Wu, who took a gold and silver at the 2008 Canada Cup Grand Prix, weighs just 37kg and is the youngest Australian diver to qualify for an Olympic Games.
''I am training really hard at the moment, so going into the Games I just want to do my best and hope the best results will follow,'' Wu said.
''I was really happy with the way I went in Canada, especially taking home the gold. I was up against some of the strongest competition, like the Chinese divers, so it was good to get that result.''
The Beijing team also includes three-time Olympic bronze medal winner Robert Newbery, husband of Chantelle, who will also compete in his third Olympics. AAP
