Rogers hits form at right time

06 Aug, 2008 01:00 AM
While Cadel Evans was the centre of attention at the Tour de France, Australian teammate Michael Rogers was making a return to form in a more understated fashion.

Rogers believes his second place overall in the five-day Sachsen Tour in Germany last month came at an ideal time as he prepares for the Olympic road race on August 9 and the time trial four days later.

''My condition's come to its peak just at the right time,'' Rogers said.

''I'm pretty glad to get back into condition and make the cut for the Olympic team.

''I'm on my way to my third Olympics.''

Rogers' result in Germany came on the back of third placings on stage two and four, which was an individual time trial his specialty.

The 28-year-old is a three-time world champion in the race against the clock and was fourth in the event at the Athens Olympics four years ago.

He was also part of Australia's team pursuit group that finished fifth on the track in Sydney in 2000.

Rogers was hit by a bad bout of glandular fever from last December until the end of March which cost him a place in his Team Columbia outfit for the Tour de France.

His spot in the Olympic time trial was confirmed when Evans initially pulled out with a knee injury after finishing runner-up in Paris for the second year in a row.

Evans has recovered to take his place alongside Rogers, Stuart O'Grady, Simon Gerrans and Matthew Lloyd for the road race in Beijing.

In the meantime, Australia has secured an additional spot in the time trial via a wildcard and a decision will be made about it going to Evans depending on how he pulls up after the road race.

Gerrans, who won stage 15 of this year's Tour de France, also believed he was peaking at the right time.

''I'm feeling a little tired as you'd expect after doing three and a half thousand kilometres in three weeks, however I'm feeling like I'm in really good shape,'' Gerrans said.

''It took me the first couple of weeks of the Tour until I really hit my best form so I feel like I can really carry on for another week or two to the Olympics.'' AAP
