ACT hopes to host nationals

22 Sep, 2008 01:00 AM
ACT Squash is hoping the successful national teams championship last weekend will boost its campaign to host further national titles.

Top seeded Queensland defended its title by downing South Australia yesterday, completing the three-day tournament at the Woden Squash Centre.

Steve Finitsis and Zac Alexander led Queensland to the teams title. They are both ranked inside the top 120 on the world professional tour but came back to Australia to help their state take the win.

The tournament also attracted several international referees.

ACT finished fifth, down a spot after being ranked fourth coming in, but the ACT was the only team to have two juniors in its championship line-up, Christine Nunn and Josh Larkin.

A loss to Victoria on the opening day of the tournament was a problem for the ACT but it rallied to make the play-off for fifth spot yesterday. The Canberra team then beat Tasmania 3-1 to claim the placing.

More than 40 competitors played in the national teams championships this weekend and the ACT squash centre was packed with more than 200 spectators each day.

ACT squash general manager Raymond Payne said the tournament had been a success and it would prove a good platform to bid for Australian open and Australian masters national titles.

''It was a resounding tick of approval from all the players,'' Payne said.

''We're aiming to bid for Australian Open and Australian masters titles in the next two to three years, and then in 2013 there is an opportunity to maybe bid for some of the world titles.

''The teams championships is an event that squash australia has identified as something that is very important in trying to strengthen the sport and so we were very happy when we were chosen to host this year's event.

''This is a great stepping stone.''

The ACT Squash centre hosted the national junior series last year, which attracted Australian and international junior players.
