 Breen off scratch at Stawell

Breen off scratch at Stawell

08 Apr, 2009 01:00 AM
She will run from scratch in this weekend's women's Stawell Gift, but Melissa Breen won't be putting any pressure on herself at the historic race.

After Breen's stellar past eight months it was only fitting the Canberra athlete was named as the backmarker for the women's 120m gift this weekend.

During that time Breen has run the second-fastest time in history for an Australian 18-year-old over 100m, won the 200m national championship and was named in the Australian world championship athletics team.

While it means her chances of winning are now tough only two men have ever won the men's gift from scratch she isn't focusing too much on results anyway.

After what has been a busy summer season and one she has to follow up with training for world titles, this weekend will be a bit of fun.

''I guess it's what you expect [running on scratch], I ran off scratch at the Queanbeyan Gift, it just gives me more time to catch the other others, but I won't be putting any pressure on myself,'' Breen said.

''It would be great to make the final and it's always nice to run for a bit of cash, but it will just be about getting some good racing in.

''It's something a bit different for me, you have to run your own race and chase the other girls down which is so different from the 100m, but for me it's not as big a priority. I have plenty of other things to focus on.''

Along with her status as the backmarker in the 120m race, Breen is part of the Athletics Australia roadshow in the event's lead-up.

She will headline a media conference in Melbourne today with Josh Ross and they will go to Bendigo the next day, generating attention before the weekend kicks off.

But it won't be just Breen garnering attention this week.

ACT 400m hurdler and runner, and Breen's training partner, Lauren Boden, will be the second backmarker. Boden will have a handicap of just 1.5m.
