Mitchell's golden night of high-flying contortions and fancy footwork

29 Nov, 2009 10:29 AM
AUSTRALIAN gymnastics team captain Lauren Mitchell won two individual gold medals last night in the friendly two-nations tournament with Japan at the AIS Arena.

The 18-year-old backed up a brilliant beam performance with a powerful floor routine, netting top spot in both events.

Japanese gymnast Momoko Ozawa took gold in the vault, while uneven bars honours went to teammate Yuko Shintake.

Winning the two gold medals is perfect preparation for next week's World Cup event in Japan, where Mitchell will contest the beam and floor.

She was confident of another strong result next week.

''I have another week of preparations so I can focus more on consistency and getting everything accurate,'' Mitchell said.

''I improved on my beam which was good I stayed on. My floor was better because I didn't do one of my skills [on Friday] and I added it back in [last night].''
