Spirit coach wants Canberra in new comp

22 Sep, 2008 01:00 AM
Sydney Spirit coach Rob Beveridge believes Saturday's match against the Adelaide 36ers at the AIS is the perfect chance for Canberra to audition for a NBL team in the coming seasons.

A review has recommended the NBL be scrapped in favour of a new elite program and Beveridge said he saw the door open for Canberra to re-enter a national men's competition.

''That is my vision and intentions to have a team in Canberra,'' Beveridge said yesterday. ''It's not going to happen overnight but I've always spoke about it, being Canberra born and bred, and if we get good support on Saturday it's a chance for the NBL to see Canberra can support a team.''

Beveridge took a break from his duties as Spirit coach to direct his son Jayden's under-12 Burgmann College team in the grand final at Tuggeranong yesterday.

The Burgmann team went down to Marist College 45-19 leaving Beveridge winless for the weekend after the Spirit lost to Wollongong on Saturday night.

Canberra has not had a team in the NBL since the Cannons folded in 2003.

But with the Spirit playing one game in the capital this season and two the following year, Beveridge was confident there was still a need for a Canberra team.

''We showed a few years ago with the Cannons that it could be successful and we have to show that it can be again.

''If we can get a few people to our [the Spirit's] games then it shows the league that we can actually have a team here.

''To me it's three or four years and hopefully we can develop a relationship with the Canberra Capitals.''

The Spirit is still searching for its first win of the season and Beveridge said the Canberra match was the perfect platform to get into the winner's circle.

''We want to win we want to win real bad,'' he said. ''Adelaide are going to be tough, there's no doubt about that.

''But we're still competing and once we gel together and get some players back we will be a good team.''

The winning teams from yesterday's junior grand finals received 10 free tickets to the match at the AIS.''Going back to grass-roots is something I think the NBL has neglected in the past few years. ''We've got to bring players back to this level to show them who is paying their salaries they have to remember where it all began.''
