United's season to start off on road

7/10/2008 12:00:00 AM
Canberra's W-League coach Robbie Hooker said starting the competition with two away games would be a positive for the team when the inaugural season kicked off on October 25.

The draw for the W-League's first season was released yesterday revealing Canberra United will play the Newcastle Jets in Newcastle and the Queensland Roar in Queensland in the first two rounds.

Its first home game will be against the Central Coast Mariners at McKellar Park on November 9.

However, the round-three game won't be the first chance that Canberra fans have to watch United, with their round-two clash against Queensland to be televised live on free to air TV.

The host broadcaster is yet to be announced, but the FFA confirmed yesterday there would be a live W-League game every Saturday on free to air television.

Hooker said starting away from home would be a good chance for the team to find its feet.

''The bonus of having two away games for the first two weeks will be giving the team a chance to iron some things out and see where your players are at,'' Hooker said.

''We'll be able to really start to put our game together by the time we play at home.''

The two away games first-up also mean that Canberra United has a favourable home draw in the run to the finals, with three of its last four games at McKellar Park.

''To finish with those games at home, obviously that is going to be important come the end of the season,'' Hooker said.

Canberra United will play expected competition favourites the Queensland Roar twice throughout the season, but will play another of the favourites, in Sydney FC, only once. United will also make the road trip to Perth to play the Glory in round six.

The league will run for 10 rounds with the top four teams playing off for finals in the second week of January. The finals format will be two semi-finals first to play fourth and second to play third, with the winners going straight through to contest the final.

The grand final will be played on January 17.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley said yesterday he expected the W-League to contribute to the Matildas' international reputation.

''In the past 12 months, the Matildas, Young Matildas and under-17 women played 30 international matches in countries as diverse as China, Brazil, New Zealand, Vietnam and the USA to name just a few,'' Buckley said.

''We expect the W-League to be a big contributor to improved performances on the world football stage for Australia's women's teams.''

Canberra United will kick off its campaign on Sunday, October 26.
