Antsy Shillington steps up to fill Learoyd-Lahrs void

18 Jun, 2009 11:35 AM
Returning Raiders forward David Shillington is confident he has sufficient conditioning to help fill the void left by Tom Learoyd-Lahrs, should the damaging back-rower remain in camp with the NSW State of Origin squad this weekend.

Learoyd-Lahrs and Raiders teammate Joel Monaghan remained on standby for the injury-hit Blues last night.

Both could both miss Canberra's crucial match against Manly at Brookvale Oval on Sunday.

Monaghan's hopes of playing in Origin II on Wednesday hinge on the fitness of injured centre Michael Jennings, while Learoyd-Lahrs is on standby in case Cronulla's Paul Gallen or South Sydney's Craig Wing submit to niggling injuries.

Raiders coach David Furner has named Shillington as 18th man for the Sea Eagles clash, although he is likely to play even if the Blues release Learoyd-Lahrs, who has been Canberra's most damaging forward this season.

A fringe Queensland prop, Shillington hasn't played since tearing a muscle in his back against the Warriors in round 11.

Despite not playing for a month, the noted big hitter was confident he would be up for a physical encounter with Manly's undermanned pack.

''The injury is all healed now and I can't wait to play,'' Shillington said.

''It was a pretty painful injury but I thought it would have healed a bit quicker than it has. With the rehab training I've had, [strength and conditioning coach] Matt Ford has trained me pretty hard.

''I've had a couple of spews on the treadmill so I'm ready to go.''
