Brisbane savours sweet revenge

07 Sep, 2009 07:57 AM
Just five weeks ago the Brisbane Broncos trudged off Canberra Stadium with their season in tatters after copping a record 56-0 belting at the hands of the Raiders.

Last night at Suncorp Stadium they exacted their revenge.

The Broncos secured a qualifying final derby against the Gold Coast Titans at Skilled Park on Saturday night, after claiming a tough 22-10 win over the Raiders.

The win was their fifth in a row, completing a remarkable turnaround for a team whose season seemed over when it was embarrassed by Canberra last month.

But coach Ivan Henjak was refusing to blow Brisbane's trumpet just yet.

''We haven't won five in a row since 2007, so it's good to go in with our confidence still there and with a bit of momentum,'' Henjak said.

''I was really happy with our defence, we made some errors, but we defended them.

''They're a good attacking team, so I was happy with our defence.

''Our attack probably needed to be a bit more patient, but we can fix that up.''

The Broncos will meet a Titans outfit reeling from an embarrassing 38-4 loss to Manly on Saturday and likely to be without injured stars Mat Rogers and Ashley Harrison.

Last night's loss notwithstanding, the Canberra Raiders should be congratulated on a good end to their season. The emergence of Dugan, Croker and the Club's other exciting juniors has been a major highlight this year, as have some of the team's fantastic wins at home over Brisbane, Melbourne and St George. I will be purchasing my 2010 membership in a few weeks' time and am already looking forward to supporting the Raiders next year. Go the Green Machine!

Broncos only had one play and that is through the ruck. Block the ruck and they are stuffed. Raiders will need to drop Tongue next year if they want to do better.

Who exactly was taken out of the play which resulted in a penalty to Brisbane and led to their second try? Everyone was too focussed on Dugan's tackle to realise that the Raider's were ripped off.

Hard to beat the Broncos in Brisbane but they tried. Still think coaching and game strategy is the weakest link!

Two points: Most of the top teams in the comp would have been given 'benefit of the doubt' on the first Canberra 'try' under the posts. Canberra seems to never get those close calls. Secondly, the obstruction penalty cost the Raiders 6 points and seemed fully bogus - point well made Ryan.
