Call for Raiders to tackle adversity

Call for Raiders to tackle adversity

30 Mar, 2009 06:49 AM
Canberra Raiders centre Joel Monaghan believes Saturday's two-point loss to Parramatta shows his team must improve how it handles controversy.

The Raiders were still stinging from the 18-16 loss yesterday, with a controversial no-try ruling against winger Justin Carney costing them their first win of the season.

While Monaghan remained adamant the try should have been awarded, he said the Raiders could have responded better to the decision and Jarryd Hayne's subsequent length-of-the-field try to turn the game.

The Eels scored a further two tries in 10 minutes after Hayne's effort, pinching the winning try with nine minutes remaining to leave the Raiders at the bottom of the ladder.

Monaghan said his team had further chances to win the game after Carney was denied.

''You've got to try not to let it get to you,'' Monaghan said.

''Personally I thought Justin had scored ... we were in control then and then they get a bit of a break.

''But even when they scored again and we were down by two we had eight minutes, we should be good enough to handle that.

''Little things can turn a game in a couple of minutes, so it's very disappointing.''

That "no try" from Carney from the scrum was a classic, reminded me of the old days. Raiders will bounce back though..

The Raiders were not magnificent on the weekend but were good enough to win. It's hard when your down to twelve men and you're playing against 15; the other side and two refs! Some decisions by the refs in that game were so blindingly bad a sane thinking person would swear they were manipulating the outcome. The NRL has got to do something about this. Fans want to see footy played and the best team win, not the team that got the most favourable decisions from the refs. There are very few games where the refs don't influence the outcome through poor decision making.

i dont know about you but we seem to get the dud calls every game! last year paul kent did an article pointing out how many tries we had dissallowed. more than any other team in the nrl, in the same article he pointed out that the raiders had the least amount tries awarded by the video ref! Sadly, this year seems to be headed in the same direction. why? because we are favourites for the spoon! had joe picker not scored, after campese attemted a 40/20 and grothes batted it back in, straight to brett kelly whow only had to fall over the line but was pulled back for a penalty{to us} without any play on! i was turning the game off! i am fed up with one sided refereeing! in both our close losses this year, to the tigers and eels refereeing has cost us the 2 points! im burning up inside! as for brett {come in from my wing} kelly,DROP him! promote dugan before he gets the poos and signs with the roosters. purtell needs to come back also. herbet again failed in my opinion. mccrone needs to be given a shot. we need DIRECTION

Am in total agreement with raidersin09. Am sick of raiders being dudded when the benefit of the doubt should apply. But it has been the same for several seasons. When it should be applied it isn't. Finch still has a hidden agenda against the Raiders. But I must say it also seems to apply to any Non Sydney club over the last couple of years. Grow up and just give us a fair go

There is NO DOUBT that the raiders get the dud end of most decisions - the 50:50 decisions ALWAYS go against the raiders. I would ask the league to review the games last year with commentary and see for themselves. I can only suggest that Canberra is not a market (look at the free-to-air decisions as well). That said the Raiders have run out of puff in two games now - which is worrying given that the pace of the games has changed.

Stop whinging, good teams get over minor refereeing errors! Sadly, this years Raiders haven't started well, I hope Dave Furner keeps his job.

I just wanted to say how impressed I was with Travis Waddell's debut into First Grade! Well done and I hope we see a lot more of him, he sure is a snazzy player!

Talk about whinging thats all the raiders can do. Last year for all the games they lost they went on to blame the Refs, Linesmen, Ball boys, The Crowd, Cheerleaders and the weather, not one mention about how they are crap and cant play football. Oh Hum this year looks like starting the same.
