 Campese decision today

Campese decision today

26 Apr, 2009 11:19 AM
Raiders coach David Furner won't finalise his team for today's clash with the Bulldogs until this morning, after star five-eighth Terry Campese returned to training yesterday.

Campese completed his first training session since injuring his foot against the Gold Coast Titans last week, giving Furner hope his chief playmaker would be ready to fire against the Bulldogs.

But he said he would check how Campese's foot pulled up this morning before confirming his line-up.

Raiders captain Alan Tongue spent some time training at five-eighth as cover for Campese, but was confident he wouldn't need to shift into the halves today.

''The plan all week was to give Campo as much rest as we possibly could and it's all worked out to plan,'' Tongue said.

''He trained as per normal, which was good.

''It has been a little blessing in disguise, because [rookie halfback] Josh McCrone has got to be the main playmaker throughout the week without Campo there.

''I've been really impressed by [McCrone] since he's come back to the club, his attitude has been great, he's trained hard and from all reports he's been playing some great footy for Souths Logan.''

The Raiders will be boosted by the early return of utility Glen Buttriss from an ankle injury, after he also completed training yesterday.

Furner is yet to decide whether to start Buttriss or Travis Waddell at hooker and will also need to drop two players off his bench.

Tongue said the addition of Buttriss to the squad was a big boost, with his versatility meaning the Raiders would have extra cover if injury struck today.

''We saw Buttsy's versatility at the end of last year.

''He was playing in the centres and in the halves and he can play at lock as well.

''He's very versatile, I thought he was still going to be another week away, but he's come through the training really well.''

The Bulldogs are likely to go into today's clash with an unchanged line-up. They arrived in Canberra last night.

Halfback Brett Kimmorley said his team was wary of Campese's attacking brilliance.
