 Canberra plays pest again

Canberra plays pest again

01 Sep, 2009 11:33 AM
Canberra Raiders coach David Furner doesn't like to admit it, but his team continued to live up to its reputation as NRL finals' pests at Canberra Stadium last night.

With nothing left to play for except pride, the Raiders opened up the top-eight race with a convincing 30-14 win over the Newcastle Knights.

The Knights could have wrapped up their first finals berth in three years by beating Canberra.

Instead they have to beat the Penrith Panthers on Sunday to remain in premiership contention.

And while Furner said he didn't use opposition teams' title aspirations as motivation, it certainly roused his players.

The Raiders ran in four first-half tries and continued their aggressive mentality against the top teams to win their last home game of the season.

The performance was so good in wet conditions it prompted Knights centre Adam MacDougall to declare the Raiders ''the hardest side to play at home other than Melbourne''.

''On the way they played tonight they're definitely a top-eight side,'' MacDougall said.

''They're a physical side, they're a big side and as [Knights coach] Rick [Stone] said they're probably arguably the hardest side to play at home other than Melbourne.

''They've shown that in their last couple of wins against Brisbane when they beat them by 50 and obviously against the Dragons as well.''

CANBERRA RAIDERS 30 (P Graham 2, B Harrison, A Tongue, D Vidot tries; T Campese 5 goals) bt NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS 14 (C Vuna 2, J Sau tries; K Gidley goal) at Canberra Stadium. Referees: Matt Cecchin, Ashley Klein. Crowd: 9400.

Well done boys on the season, pretty up & down and very unlucky in many games we should have won, but many we shouldn't have lost. Best thing was the experience that Crocker, Vidot, Dugan, Thompson, Carney etc got from playing with the first graders. Lets put in a big game this weekend and enjoy the off season and come back better next year!

After several inspirational wins that show just how could they can be the "Hot and Cold" Raiders are left to rue three or four games they threw away that cost them a spot in the finals. Sorry - no membership renewal next year - better things to do with my time like watch the ACT Canberra Cup games - at least they are entertaining!

Great win boys. I suppose Grahams neck is still on the line. Management you may have the youth policy for next year and beyond, but you still need the veterans to steer the youth again. So Logan and Graham are a must.

John D - good riddance to you then.... just dont come crawling back when it "suits" you to support a team.... I will certainly by a member AGAIN in 2010, and I have managed to get a couple more to sign up too!.

good win last night in pretty average conditions. couple of things though... harrison's tackle was nothing and vidot should stick to using his hands not his legs like a cage fighter but full credit to him for his try and how he has adapted to 1st grade this season. Now one thing i dont understand is our recruitment and retention. last season we let colin best go who was the difference in our run to the finals and again its a mystery why we let him go as is why we let adam mogg go a few seasons back as well. i am all for the youth policy but another stand out error was that in letting withers go. he would of made a big difference to the raiders this year out of dummy half and half back if need be but again we let him go. now its grahams turn to be shown the door as well and our backline lacks experience apart from monohagn whom doesnt have the speed or flair of graham. interesting decisions and i for one question the decisions made by the club and i hope next season we make the finals otherwise i think it will be a struggle to retain our young exciting players.

Now if they keep that form against the top sides and develop a killer mentality against the lesser sides, next year will be brilliant. There were games this year where they should have notched up cricket scores and built up their for and against percentage. I'll be renewing my membership because that's what true fans do.

Reality, You don't know when you are being 'done', do you?

John D - we are fair and foul weather supporters - you clearly are only a fair weather one. We are not being done. The season ticket was worth it this year, losses notwithstanding - its all about being loyal - which means you take the bad with the good. It is called being a grown up.

Fans need to encourage more people to games. Overall the raiders are a great team who win most games at home and can provide an open style of play.
