Canberra stumbles as Olympics come and go

15 May, 2009 08:25 AM
To put the Canberra Raiders' Olympic Park hoodoo into perspective, there's been three Olympic Games held since their last win in Melbourne.

'Syd-er-nee' was fast approaching, but shovels had barely hit the ground in Athens and Beijing was still only a wannabe Games host in July 2000 when Lesley Vainikolo's two tries helped the Raiders squeak home in a 20-16 upset.

In 23 matches against the Storm at home and away, the Raiders have won just five for an appalling 21 per cent success rate. That's only a touch over half of their next worst head-to-head percentage.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy said yesterday he didn't care about the stats of the hoodoo, which has seen the Storm win 13 games since the Raiders' last victory at Canberra Stadium in 2002, incidently a win orchestrated by current Storm halfback Brett Finch.
