Carney punted for season

27 Jul, 2008 01:00 AM
CANBERRA playmaker Todd Carney will play no further role in the Raiders' season after the club's board decided to stand the embattled star down.

The club's board imposed a five-pronged sanction on the 22-year-old which includes a hefty fine.

After meeting before last night's 46-4 win over the Gold Coast Titans, the board decided to:

Suspend Carney from playing and training for the rest of this season,

Put him on an alcohol ban,

Fine him an undisclosed amount,

Provide counselling,

Force him into voluntary work.

Carney's manager David Riolo said he would consider appealing the board's punishment.

Club chief executive Don Furner said after the Raiders' win over the Titans that Carney would take no further part this season and must undergo counselling.

It is the third time the Raiders have been forced to impose a punishment on the 22-year-old from Goulburn.

He will miss out on the finals which the Raiders seem destined to make after last night's emphatic win.

Carney allegedly urinated on a member of the public after an alcohol-fuelled night that ended at O'Connor pub All Bar Nun last Sunday.

Last year he was banned from playing after his involvement in a police car chase through the streets of Canberra and found guilty of evading arrest and driving without a licence.

Riolo, who learned of his client's sanctions just moments before Furner told the media, said Carney was ''shattered'' and ''extremely disappointed''.

''He was hoping to be back on the field next week,'' Riolo told The Canberra Times last night.

''I spoke to Todd and he's obviously disappointed.

''I haven't had anything sent to me yet from the club, all I've had is a phone call from Don and they said they would send me a written statement next week.''

Riolo agreed that Carney had a problem with alcohol.

''He doesn't have a drinking problem as he does not have to drink everyday or anything like that but when he does drink he has problems,'' Riolo said.

''The best solution probably is for him not to drink at all.''

The Raiders board met at the stadium before last night's win and voted not to sack Carney but to suspend him and make sure he undertakes counselling.

The board will also deny him any further role in the leadership group and will suggest he undertakes volunteer work in the community.

''The board also decided in impose a fine on him,'' Furner said. ''A substantial amount but it's no point going into that.''

Carney's teammate Bronx Goodwin has been summonsed to appear in court to face two charges of assault for his involvement in a brawl outside the O'Connor night spot on the same night.

''Bronx Goodwin is still stood down until his magistrate's hearing on August 11. That's all I have to say, I've spoken to Todd's manager about this and don't want to say much more until we've sat down with Todd which probably won't be until Monday.''

Riolo said he would look over a review of the alleged incident to decide whether there were grounds to appeal.
