 Centre tempers rep hopes

Centre tempers rep hopes

28 Aug, 2009 02:36 PM
If Canberra Raiders centre Joel Monaghan has learnt anything this year it's not to get his hopes up about representative selection.

So with just two club games left this season the last thing on the 27-year-old's mind is impressing the Australian selectors ahead of the upcoming Four Nations tournament.

Monaghan is one of a handful of Raiders with a chance of playing in England and France in October and November.

Back-rower Bronson Harrison is a near certainty to be in the New Zealand line-up, while forwards David Shillington and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs are outside chances of making the Australian squad.

Monaghan played on Australia's wing during last year's World Cup campaign.

But after a string of selection snubbings this season he said he wasn't holding his breath at the prospect of pulling on the green and gold jersey again.

''If this year has taught me anything it's just to play footy and let everything else happen as it does,'' Monaghan said.

The way Joel Thompson, Vidot, Croker and Graham have been playing and with Justin Carney to come back next year, Monaghan should be grateful if he manages to snag Graham's soon-to-be-vacant wing spot. They've been playing far, far better than he has for the past 4-5 weeks. JT could be the next "safe" Origin and Australian centre if he continues to develop the way he has in just three games. Forget playing him in the 2nd row.

how is the worst defensive centre in the NRL going to play rep footy? croker has developed into a outstanding prospect in the centres and vidot has looked good as well. Monaghan doesnt have the flair to play rep footy he is a one dimensional player whose purpose is to catch those "amazing" cross field kick plays that the raiders insist on.
