Terry Campese will visit a specialist today to assess any further damage to his eye after injuring it in Sunday's win against Papua New Guinea in the Rugby League World Cup.
The Canberra Raiders playmaker was forced off with a bleeding eye and blurred vision after an incident with former teammate Neville Costigan.
The injury effectively ends Campese's brief World Cup campaign, lasting just 16 minutes of his first match for the Kangaroos.
According to Raiders and Australia teammate Joel Monaghan, Campese suffered more bleeding from the eye on Sunday night after the match, and saw a specialist yesterday.
He has been instructed to rest for the remainder of the week.
Costigan, who will play for the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2009, has been charged with a careless high tackle for the incident, and faces a one-match ban. But Costigan said he felt little sympathy for Campese, who he sat next to on the flight from Townsville to Sydney yesterday.
''We were on the same flight, I was sitting right next to him actually, but I didn't see him,'' he said. ''He left pretty quick, he might be a bit dirty, but oh well, that's the way it goes.
''I have got no hard feelings against him, I don't know if he's got anything against me, but I was just playing footy.''
Costigan, who featured in all three matches for Papua New Guinea at the World Cup, said the incident was just part of the game.
''One of the reporters came in last night [Sunday] and said Campese had to go to hospital and I didn't think anything about it, I didn't know if I'd done anything to him.
''But this morning [I was told] I went in to a tackle and hurt him.
''I feel a bit bad but it's part of the game.''
Monaghan, who scored two tries in Australia's 46-6 win, said it was a rough break for Campese.
''Hopefully it's some good news from the specialist, but it's just so disappointing after the year he has had, he really deserved his chance to show the world what he's got.''
Monaghan said he was confident there was no ill-feeling between Costigan and Campese.
''I think Nev didn't even know it happened, the two are pretty good mates, and even though, to be honest, I didn't see it, I can't imagine it being intentional.'' with AAP
